Bioenergy

ACS is present in the market for first-generation liquid biofuels bioethanol and biodiesel, which have already a mature technology and are commercially available. Bioethanol produced from sugar-rich crops such as sugar cane, sugar beet and sweet sorghum, or starch such as corn, wheat and cassava. Biodiesel is produced from vegetable oils or higuereta castor, soybean, oil palm, jatropha, and other global minor, animal fats, micro algae and waste cooking oil. The sector has experienced an annual growth of 10% since 2000, and it was estimated that biofuel production totaled 90 billion liters in the world (82% ethanol – 18% biodiesel) in 2009. To get an idea of the potential of this market, it is estimated that in 2008 biofuels accounted for 1.5% of the fuels in the transport sector worldwide (IEA, 2008a).
